What is Projections?
Projections is a well established national competition and screening event run annually by a volunteer organisation called Trampoline under the umbrella of the ACMP (Australian Commercial and Media Photographers).
Its aim is to identify Australia’s top emerging photographers and to raise their profiles by presenting their fresh and challenging work to the creative industry and wider community.
Who can enter Projections?
You need to be an Australian resident and one of the following:
1. studying photography
2. working as a photography assistant
3. an emerging photographer working professionally for less than three years
4. a photo artist with less than three years peer recognised experience
When do entries for Projections close?
Midnight 30th June 2011.
When is Projections screened?
Projections 2011 will be screened in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra in September 2011.
Where will the work be seen?
The finalists’ work is put together in an audio-visual screening shown in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane & Canberra theatres.
The screenings in each city are one night only with a chance for Projections finalists and the creative industry to mingle with free drinks and canapés.
How many finalists are chosen?
We aim to bring as much good work to the screen as we can, so depending on the number of entries and recommendations from judges, the Trampoline committee and the curator can choose between 15 and 20 finalists.
Who are the judges?
The judges are chosen by the Trampoline committee from noted industry persons – photographers, gallery curators, designers and art directors, they change every year.
What should I photograph for my entry?
What you photograph is up to you but remember that Projections is a competition based on themed entries. Judges are looking for a body of work with a consistently strong theme/story.
How will I find out if my work has been selected?
You will receive an email by August 2011 along with a request for any further material we may need to make a successful projection of your work.
Can I use work from 5 years ago?
No, the work must be new and completed between 1st June 2010 and 30th June 2011.
Can I submit artwork?
Yes, as long as it is of a photographic origin, easily recognisable as having photography as its source and you are a practising photographic artist.
Is mailing my entry in the only option?
The preferred method of entry is via digital upload on our website. If this is not possible, a CD can be sent via mail. Please refer to the Terms & Conditions for full details of all entry requirements.
How much does it cost?
Entry is $30 per category to all Trampoline/ACMP members and $50 for non-members
What are the prizes?
Along with the massive publicity and exposure of you and your work to some of the most influential people in the creative industries, each finalist receives an assortment of prizes from our sponsors including Momento Pro Books, Crumpler Bags and vouchers from Kayell. Category winners also receive Sony Cameras and equipment and studio hire from The Front.
All finalists are also invited to participate in a Master Class run by advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi and will be a part of the people’s choice award with the winner and voter receiving prizes from Momento Pro.
What should I shoot?
We told you, anything you like! HINT! Shoot something you are passionate about because it will show in your work.
See the terms and conditions for a detailed description of categories.
Is there a limit to the number of images we can submit?
A minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 images but they must all be part of a cohesive series. Bear in mind that certain categories lend themselves to a larger number of images per entry than others ie. we would expect more images to be submitted as part of an editorial entry than a commercial entry
.Whilst we prefer to show each series as it’s submitted, we may reduce that number if we deem it necessary for curatorial reasons.
Is my work good enough to enter into Projections?
You’ll never know if you don’t try! Projections is all about supporting photographers in the early stages of their career, before they have big budgets clients or advertising agencies paying their bills. So be creative, work with what you have and most importantly, give it a go!
What are the terms and conditions of entry for Projections 2011?
Please download the T&C here. You’ll need to agree to them as part of the registration process.
